Writing Lab Fall Workshop Series

The Writing Lab at the Student Success Center is offering four workshops this fall, open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Two sessions focus on graduate school application writing, one addresses the use of AI in academic writing, and one covers oral presentation skills. All sessions are free and open to the RPI community.

Workshops are held at the Student Success Center, Folsom Library, 1st Floor from 4-5p.m.

September 16: How to Start Your Graduate School Application

For students preparing to apply to graduate school, this workshop covers strategies for writing a Statement of Purpose (SOP) or personal statement. Topics include how to begin the writing process, organize ideas, and connect prior experiences to future goals in a way that reads clearly to an admissions committee.

October 7: Show, Don't Tell: Make Your Grad Essay Stand Out

A strong application essay relies on specific evidence rather than general claims. This workshop covers the "show, don't tell" principle and how to use concrete examples and details to support statements about a student's strengths, interests, and goals. Students will leave with strategies for revising general statements into more persuasive, evidence-based writing.

October 14: AI and Writing: Academic Integrity and Your Voice

As AI tools become more common in the writing process, students need a clear understanding of how to use them appropriately. This workshop addresses how AI can support writing and research while maintaining academic integrity and preserving a student's own voice and judgment in their work.

November 18: Giving Effective Presentations

This workshop addresses the fundamentals of academic presentations, including how to organize content, design clear slides, and communicate directly with an audience. The session also covers how to structure a presentation so that it informs and holds attention, rather than simply relaying information.
